E3 2018 – Ubisoft Recap and Reactions Podcast

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-cfz3t-93a221

Kevin is joined by Nathan to cap off our E3 coverage with Ubisoft, they will talk AC, Division, Mario and Rabbids? Will there be just dancing?

Banner_PSVG_Podcast.png

There is this moment in one of my favorite TV shows, Living Single, where Overton watches the girl he cares for (Synclaire) going on a date with a veterinarian. In the middle of the vet and Synclaire’s date, the vet receives a phone call that eventually leads to him having to leave the restaurant early for a vet emergency. As the vet walks out, Overton strolls up looking dapper and fly and proceeds to go on a date with the girl he loves, Synclaire.

Why does this moment stick out in my head? Well because I think that Phil Spencer is in the process of pulling the same move with gamers. As Sony has all the games, exclusives that have already come, and a huge install base you know that it is established i.e. the vet. Gamers aka Synclaire would be happy to settle down with Sony.

But Xbox is playing Overton and playing it like a champ. Xbox knows that you gamers are great. It has spent the last few years showing gamers that they care about games and you. They care about making amends for past mistakes where they didn’t have gamers in the forefront. This was in full display at E3 this year.

The thing that keeps getting at me though isn’t that Microsoft had a great conference–conference of the year type stuff. No its the following two things:

Microsoft-Xbox-E3-2018-Phil-Spencer

Shortly before this moment, Phil Spencer teased the shadowing of a console. I tried to find a picture of it but was unable too. I watched the conference five times to confirm it. This is where I noticed his shirt. It seems at first glance just to be a cool shirt, right? Hello, Xbox swag store.

But, when you look at it, it’s the development and break down of a controller. Man how crazy is that? Its like a hidden message in a bottle except on the bottle it says, we are working on a new system and it is coming sooner than you think. Why do I think this? Is it because I spent four hours in the sun today in Florida and am a little dehydrated? Is it because I didn’t sleep well and am running on fumes? Or is it because many of the shirts Phil has worn at E3 and Gamescom have turned out to be IP that came to and out of Microsoft and I think its Phil’s cruel joke to foreshadow and hide secretes in plan sight to mess with us? I’m not sure which one is more accurate, but something tells me the console shadow during his ending speech was more than just for dramatic effect and that this shirt was chosen for a reason.

We will see. As Lobo and I say, All Hail the Chief, In Phil we trust!

I really, really want to like Legendary Eleven, the latest arcade soccer game from Spanish developer Eclipse Games. As you’ll discover below, the game just misses the mark, thanks to reliability issues the crop up nearly every game.

In Legendary Eleven, you choose from one of 36 countries to take through the World Cup, or one of a handful of smaller regional tournaments. The only modes in the game are the tournament mode or exhibition.

The game has a distinct look, with players looking like they would fit in with the 1970s, with their short shorts. The game also looks like it might fit in well on the PlayStation 2. There is little music in the game, and the only sounds during gameplay are occasion PA announcements, some crowd reaction and soccer-playing noises.

LegendaryEleven 2018-04-20 12-17-52-57

The core gameplay is fun and easy to pick up-and-play. There is a button to pass, a button to shoot, a button for a special dribble and a sprint button. There’s an additional ability for a “pass through,” but I found it to be largely ineffective. As you make passes, you build a special meter; once that meter is full, you merely need to get into a shooting position and hit the right button combination in order to hit a special kick. This kick is unblockable and always goes in.

At face value, Legendary Eleven is a fun and competent arcade soccer game. And, if you were playing with another human player, it can be super competitive. But the wheels fall off when playing against the computer.

I’ll start with that special kick that always goes in. It’s great in-theory, but can get quite infuriating when the AI team gets multiple super kicks in a row. I also found the inputs required for the special kick to only work part of the time. For every kick that I pulled off flawlessly, I’d make two kicks with the same button press, only to see the ball soar over the net.

Once I got the hang of score goals without the special move, I became nearly unstoppable, scoring 6 and 7 goals per game. There is no adjustable difficulty.

Another complicating factor here, is that the AI players will occasionally just stop responding to you. I tested this in multiple games, where I would just stand still on my half of the pitch, and as long as I didn’t move, the other team never approached me. In two separate games, I stood still from the 20-minute mark, through to the end of the half at 45 minutes. (I’m not sure how long the halves actually are, but games do go pretty quickly.)

LegendaryEleven 2018-04-29 18-48-09-46.png

Prior to starting the game, the developer informed me of a bug that crops up when players perform a lot of tackles in the game. After a number of tackles, the player-controlled team loses control, and the ball will listlessly roll away for the remainder of the half. The developer said they are working on a fix for this bug. Despite this warning, I figured things would be fine in the end. Yet, I have had many games with this bug popping up. Typically, the only way to get the ball away from the computer team is to tackle, which means that I frequently came up against games that essentially ended with this glitch.

One final glitch that popped up occasionally for me is when the opposing goalkeeper will sometimes kick the ball straight into the stands. I’m not sure why this happens.

Legendary Eleven has a few good things going for it. At its best, it could evoke my dorm-room couch gaming sessions of FIFA 06 that I look back on fondly. With the current build, however, it doesn’t reach its best very often. If the above-mentioned glitches get patched out, and if the AI will attack on defense a bit more, then it can be a perfectly serviceable arcade futbol game. Until then? Grab Soccer Slammers or stick with FIFA 18 for your footie fix.

Rating: 50/100

Legendary Eleven was reviewed using a code provided by the developer.

News Break:

madden19

Leaks have come from the New York Jets camp that the great Jets Madden Owner and GM Dan W Johnson will be retiring this year making this his last year in his storied Madden Career. We cover the highs, lows, and get info from around the league as speculation rises on why he is leaving the game.

IMG_0833

Lows:

There were not many lows in GM Dan’s career. He was a player’s owner who did right by his team and was known for his generosity. Not a lot of wasted money, spent on players who deserved it, and let players test free agency and still welcomed them back with open arms. The only low or issue was the pesky monkey on his back, the Chicago Bears and GM Mahoney. Like the Bills of the 90’s his Jets teams made it to the promised land multiple times but left with only two super bowl wins in his 11 year career. Some teams just have your number and sadly one of the greatest madden Gm’s of all time competed against a fellow great in the same era. Will he make it into the PSVG Madden Hall of Fame, this writer believes its hard to keep him out, but we will have to see in the next five years how his story unfolds.

Highs:

Seeing the Jets hoist the super bowl championship must be one of the highs but the most impressive was the way Gm Dan built a team to last. With multiple years of NFL AFC dominance as well as very high draft grades, you knew after year one, this was a new jets regime that wanted to win and to keep winning.

The moment that will stand out to me as the greatest was the “Turnover Bowl.” That may have been the best worst Super Bowl of all time.

Multiple winning seasons, 8-year conference champion, and two-time super bowl victor. Over 10 hall of famers drafted and more memories than we can count. Thank you, Dan.

Jets Pro Bowl Quarterback Tyler Mace:

Had it not been for Mr. Johnson, I would have never gotten the chance to compete and win super bowls that I have with the Jets. So grateful for all he and his wife Z, have done for me.

IMG_0835

Former Giants Owner Ray statement:

{Dan} always worked hard at struggling. His defense was a solid mixture of the 2012 Jaguars and the ’85 Browns, but he won just as many games as the ’17 Giants… All heart that guy. No skill, but lots of freaking heart.

Chiefs Owner Brian Statement:

I just don’t get how he stopped me with both the plays I ran. I mean seriously, I have two plays at they aren’t working, game must be broken.

Former New England Head Coach Darth Vader statement:

It’s unthinkable, I thought he’d never retire… But I wonder if he will come back out of retirement for a shot at glory once more…

Former Chicago Bears QB, Current Bears Offensive Coordinator and Hall of Famer Jay Cutler:

I know as a team we aren’t commenting on this, but it feels wrong. I am honored to of played against those great Jets teams put together by GM Dan Johnson. He was a terrific leader and built a great franchise we are still game-planning for and hope to battle again for super bowls to come.

IMG_0832 (1)

Current Bears Head coach Matt Nagy:

I’d love to say more but with just being hired on by the Bears I know how they feel about being a tight-lipped group. The Bear way is the Bear way. I wish him all the luck in his retirement.

Statement from Bears Owner and GM Mahoney:

When we reached out to Bears Media Director Charles Tillman who said the GM had no comment. We reached out multiple times, again and again but still nothing. With such a storied relationship and careers it didn’t sit right with us here at PSVG sports. No, we couldn’t let that be how we ended this article.

So, we flew to Chicago and drove to Halas hall hoping that we could get more from this storied franchise on the retirement of one of the best Madden GM’s in the game. Media Director Charles Tillman and others informed me that GM Mahoney had no comment and was solely focused on continuing to build the Bears in to the best team he could.

However, as I was being escorted out of Halas hall I saw old Mo standing in his office overlooking Cutler field-house. He looked at me with a glass in his hand. Nodded, and poured a little out, letting me know that even though it went against the Bear way to talk to me and that it was always work first in that building, he understands the lose of a great competitor and GM. As I continued, leaving Halas hall, he turned and stared out over the field. Would we ever know the true story about the bond these two GM’s had? Will we ever understand what it was like having them both hired at the same time and turn two lackluster teams into NFL greatness? I hope some day I am there to read that story along with you.

e3 Press Conferences are outdated

See the source image

Every year during E3 week, video game publishers talk about the games they’re planning to release in the next couple of years (or, sometime in the next decade at least…). It’s an exciting time to be a gamer, as we learn about the worlds we will be inhabiting.

A host of companies hold live presentations to reveal the latest games, and the bevy of gaming media across the globe grade these companies on how well the presentations went. (Hey, we’ve got coverage of every conference here at PSVG. Subscribe to the podcast feed!)

But we spend too much time talking about how the presenters did. Was there enough gameplay? Were there enough surprises? Too much time on mobile games? Why’d they waste so much time on live music and YouTube personalities!?

The thing is, the world and how we consume media have changed greatly since the first Electronics Entertainment Expo more than two decades ago. Gaming itself has broken into the mainstream, with millions of people watching and playing games all over the world. More people watch eSports. More than 100 million people watch the largest League of Legends tournaments online.

Many hardcore gamers get their gaming news straight from the source — the Playstation Blog debuts games on a near-daily basis. YouTube personalities play a role in showing off developers’ hard work.

And, yet…we sit and watch as EA, Microsoft, Bethesda, Devolver, Ubisoft, Square Enix and PlayStation get up on stages and talk about games. Everything between gameplay is derided as pointless, unless you have a charismatic person like Todd Howard who doesn’t fully rely on a teleprompter.

The information revealed in these staid presentations could easily be included in standard press releases, accompanied by videos. Nintendo’s Directs have this flavor, but the idea could easily be adapted to fit each company’s corporate flavor. This year’s Direct was fantastic, with about 20 minutes of fast-hitting trailers and announcements, followed by a 25-minute deep dive into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The best part of E3 — for me — is in perusing through the deluge of news and picking out what I’m interested in learning more about. The coverage that mainstream sites like IGN, Kinda Funny, Polygon and more put up throughout the event is worth far more than the presentations themselves. PlayStation and Nintendo’s livestreams are far more interesting and informative than the presentations.

I’m not calling for an end to E3 itself, but instead a reimagining of how the information is released. It can cost less, take less time and be for efficient, all while still stoking conversation and getting gamers excited.

There is plenty to be excited about, as well. Personally, I’m super excited for Fallout 76, StarLink, Anthem, Spider-Man, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and more. But I don’t need to watch hour-long “conferences” to stoke the fire of excitement. I need informative gameplay sessions with insightful commentary and interviews.

These are the views of the author, and not PSVG as a whole.

PSVG Under Attack from Giant Developer

See the source image

E3. E to the frickin 3. Man what a whirlwind it has been. So much news, games, content to make. Well, until last night that is. Last night we lived those famous lyrics “I fought the law and the law won.”

We stand here today draggin our broken bones and body towards the midway point of E3 hoping to find some common ground with our foe.

As our stream was up sharing our live reactions of all the Ubisoft things. And then boom, the juggernaut that is Ubi said no, not today PSVG. The blocked us, locked us up, and threw away the key.

Now why would Ubisoft go against the PSVG empire you ask? I mean we are like the best PSVG podcast network I know. We have all the personalities and content in every which way and form. I asked myself that same question and came up with three possible ideas.

Could this be because of the good reviews we didn’t give their games? Could it be because we wouldn’t sell out and let them buy our voice? Could it be the fact that one dashing and very good looking coach Mo wasn’t on the stream?

After texting Kevin early this morning I found out it was none of these things. He reminded me that I love Ubisoft games and play a lot of them (Siege for life). It was an unfortunate incident that lead to the 90 day block on YouTube for us sharing with this great community here at PSVG.

Later, they apologized to boss man Don and said they would work on a fix asap. How soon will it come, we don’t know. Now I speculate that this was intentional due to some comments of the salty persuasion made towards a certain game with ships. Can I prove this… No. Will I pursue finding the truth? Probably not. Will I make sarcastic remarks on the internet? Like a Dev T to Destiny, you bet I will. Watch yourself Ubi, I’m on to you.

Xbox at E3 2018 – Live Reactions & Recap

See the source image

Well boys & girls, Xbox has left the E3 stage and boy did they bring a TON of games with them. Donnie, Q & Coach Mo talked over the live show with their impressions live which you can watch below or skim the details below.

INVESTING IN DEVELOPMENT OF ORIGINAL CONTENT
Microsoft announced it is doubling its game development studios by adding five new creative teams to the Microsoft Studios family. New investments include the formation of a brand-new studio, The Initiative, the acquisition of Playground Games, and letters of intent to acquire Ninja Theory, Undead Labs and Compulsion Games.

  • The Initiative. Based in Santa Monica, Calif., The Initiative is a brand-new Microsoft game development studio headed by industry veteran Darrell Gallagher that is working to create groundbreaking new worlds, characters and game experiences.
  • Playground Games . Microsoft has acquired U.K.-based Playground Games, a development partner since 2010 that has helped grow the “Forza” franchise to new heights. In addition to its work on this year’s “Forza Horizon 4,” Playground Games will have a team dedicated to bringing their open-world expertise to an entirely new project.
  • Ninja Theory . The relationship between Ninja Theory and Microsoft started in 2000 when “Kung Fu Chaos” was in development for the original Xbox and culminated in the release of “Hellblade” on Xbox One earlier this year. Microsoft’s intent to acquire Ninja Theory will help ensure the creative team has the resources and freedom to bring more ambitious games like “Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice” to fans.
  • Undead Labs. Seattle-based Undead Labs is the creator of the popular “State of Decay” franchise, enjoyed by millions of fans worldwide. In the first two weeks since “State of Decay 2” launched, more than two million fans joined the fight to survive and took down more than two billion zombies. By entering into a letter of intent to acquire Undead Labs, Microsoft is signaling its commitment to growing the franchise and taking the zombie survival-fantasy genre to new heights.
  • Compulsion Games. As “We Happy Few” nears its full, multiplatform release on Aug. 10, Microsoft has entered into a letter of intent to acquire Montreal-based Compulsion Games. By joining the team at Microsoft Studios, Compulsion will have the resources, platform and freedom to take even bigger creative risks and create even more ambitious worlds with its future projects.
