Indie Highlight - Clive 'N' Wrench: Time Trouble

Believe it or not, Clive ‘N’ Wrench originated from Kickstarter similar to fellow platformers A Hat In Time, Yooka-Laylee, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, Shovel Knight and Mighty No. 9. According to this game’s first Kickstarter, it raised £537 of the £25,000 goal. Despite failing its two Kickstarter campaigns, development continues until this day. The first Kickstarter launched in May 2014, but the developing team were rash in their decisions so they commenced a second Kickstarter on Feb. 21, 2015.

The game's premise has Doctor Daucus tampering with time, with the his anthropomorphic animal minions doing his evil bidding and obeying his every whim. Thankfully, Nancy Merricarp somehow caught wind of the mad scientist’s meddling with the time stream and came up with a solution in a form of a 1950s refrigerator disguised as a time machine in hopes of restoring time to normalcy. Though this game reminds me of Bugs Bunny: Lost In Time more than anything else.

Due to the time traveling theme, the main collectibles are the colorful pocket watches, which were scattered all over the locations themed after each time era. Gathering them up in mass numbers will fix the rifts caused by the disruption in the space-time continuum and allow the heroes to unlock other time periods.

In order to overcome obstacles, navigate through uncharted, treacherous locales and get to the spots they couldn’t reach otherwise, Clive and Wrench share a plethora of abilities like a sideways somersault (like the sideways somersault from Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine), the WrenchCopter (it’s formerly a banana leaf which Wrench employs as a means of gliding across bottomless pits and cavernous gaps before landing on the ground safely), a roll, single jump, double jump (which is a norm in nearly every single 3D platformer to date, both past and recent), a crouch, followed by a jump move, swinging Wrench in a circular motion to attack enemies, obliterating items or activate switches, an animal-like sprint, swimming in numerous surfaces of bodies of waters, swimming underwater and the list goes on.

Depending on where Clive and Wrench are, they’re clad in various attires to suit the current area they’re traveling around in, which is an attention to detail that hasn't been seen since Mario Party 2, Gex 3D: Enter the Gecko and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. For example, Clive and Wrench don cowboy hats while exploring a wild west-themed level.

Speaking of the levels: The Chimp, The Bag and The Bunny, A Grave Mistake, The Great Wen, Corsair’s Cove, Iceceratops, Tempus Tombs, Hare Today, Gone Tomorrow (originally known as Mental Oriental), Middle Age Crisis, Bunny, I Shrunk The Chimp, Ancient Greece Trap, Cajun Mob Bog and so on, are places based on their respective time eras that makes up the Space Between Time hub world.

The developing team is comprised of the following members: Rob Wass who single-handedly created and developed the game and its characters as well as the founder of DinosaurBytes; Luigi Lucarelli who is the illustrator and the artist behind the official artwork; Kevin Wass (otherwise known as Wyshwood Studio) who is the composer of the game and created the in-game sounds; Michael Saunders who coded the game and Blake Swift (famously known as ShadyVox) is the freelance voice actor of Clive, Wrench and the other characters.
