Goodbye Telltale, Best Wishes Clem, RIP Reuben.

It is with a heavy heart I type these words.

Goodbye Telltale, best wishes Clem, RIP Reuben.

News broke today that the Telltale studio is closing, laying off over 200 employees and only keeping a few on. In the statement by CEO Pete Hawley reads

“It’s been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course. Unfortunately, we ran out of time trying to get there. We released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, but ultimately, that did not translate to sales. With a heavy heart, we watch our friends leave today to spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry.”

Goodbye Telltale, best wishes Clem, RIP Reuben.

This crushed me. This has been one of my hardest weeks to date, and I would relive this a thousand times over to make it so I don’t have to say goodbye to a studio I have loved so much. I have played and 1000 every Telltale game but one. I originally found out about the studio due to the fact it had such easily achieved achievements. But, they did the impossible. They made me put down my sports games and first person shooters, to enjoy their stories. Their blend of catching you off guard with amazing moments and taking you on a journey unlike any I had been on before changed they way I played and viewed games.

To this day, Minecraft Story mode is one of my top 5 favorite games of all time. If I look back to my top 20 I see more and more of their games pop up, like the Walking Dead Last Frontier and Walking Dead Michonne. I loved these games, I bought them and shared them with friends because I just felt in my heart they needed to be played and so many passed them up. Could that be why Telltale fell? Honestly, I don’t know why Telltale failed. I can guess though and when I do, I blame myself. I always wait for the physical release of their games, so I can beat them in one or two sittings and trade it in once I have beaten the game. I only own two of the digitally due to the fact they are my favorites and I want to replay them over and over again.

Goodbye Telltale, best wishes Clem, RIP Reuben.

I think there are more achievement hunters like myself who did the same, and waited. The waiting lead to the early fall of Telltale. As we found ourselves waiting to buy, they found themselves waiting to make or finish chapters. Eventually the waiting stopped and now they are gone. Wonderful writers will now hopefully catch on at other places and more stories will come from this, I hope.

I wish I was ready to say goodbye to this studio. I thought we had more games, more experiences, more tales… to tell. Sadly, it seems this is over. I can dream of a company like Microsoft saving them, I can wish for it even. But something like this doesn’t get fixed in a day. I’m not going to walk up Saturday morning to Telltale is saved. So I will simply say goodbye to this developer, thank them for giving me so much, and hope they find new homes and are able to create more worlds for me to fall in love with.

Goodbye Telltale, Best wishes Clem, RIP Reuben.

Those who made these characters and worlds may never know how much I loved them, but if you are one of those Hero’s, I hope you know how grateful I am and how sorry, because I waited.

Goodybe Telltale.

Best wishes Clem.

RIP…. Reuben.
